I happened to read recently a book called “The Grand Design” by the famous astrophysicists Stephen Hawkings. It argues that invoking God is not necessary to explain the origins of the universe, and that the Big Bang is a consequence of the laws of physics alone. I wonder, why the book was titled as “Grand Design” and its a definite misnomer. Every design should have a cause/designer who designed it. According to Stephen Hawkings, the universe happened to exist itself without any external intervention. If this is the case, then our universe happens to be a beautiful, intelligent and complex pattern that arose by itself and it should have been as the “The Grand Pattern” instead of “The Grand Design”. Here comes the debate…

I will first try to explain why our universe is considered to be a grand design rather than a self occuring pattern through the following evidences:
Irreducible Complexity:
As the name suggests, every system in the universe is of the nature of irreducible complexity. Every thing that exists has a purpose and the system is of no use without the existence of even one of its sub-components. For example, consider a mousetrap consists of several interacting pieces — the base, the catch, the spring and the hammer — all of which must be in place for the mousetrap to work. Removal of any one piece destroys the function of the mousetrap. Intelligent design advocates assert that natural selection could not create irreducibly complex systems, because the selectable function is present only when all parts are assembled.
Then comes Specified Complexity:
The term “specified complexity” from information theory when claiming that messages transmitted by DNA in the cell were specified by intelligence, and must have originated with an intelligent agent. The Human DNA is very complex,that information encoded in it could not have been a result of a random experiment. If randomness is the case, then human DNA should have been generated by millions of monkey typing something on the keyboards and it turned out to be Life at the very end !
Fine-Tuned Universe:
There are various cosmological and physical constants that exist today as we are familiar with the help of our science books. They are very accurate indeed. These include the values of fundamental physical constants, the relative strength of nuclear forces, electromagnetism, and gravity between fundamental particles, as well as the ratios of masses of such particles. Intelligent design proponent and Center for Science and Culture fellow Guillermo Gonzalez argues that if any of these values were even slightly different, the universe would be dramatically different, making it impossible for many chemical elements and features of the Universe, such as galaxies, to form ! 😀
Finally , an Intelligent Designer comes into Picture
Finally ,it is impossible for life and universe to come into existence just by mere instance of co-incidence. Every instance in our universe points to a supernatural designer in some or the other way.A question may arise, If a designer is responsible,then who is responsible for the designer to exist ? This designer can be God/Supernaturality/Aliens etc . Recently, M-Theorists have found that there are 11 dimensions of our universe existing and we merely live in 3 dimensions of it.In higher dimensions,time doesn’t play a role. The designer whom we speak about may live in a timeless dimension and thus, there can be no questions regarding his existence.
